Microneedling

What is microneedling?

Microneedling uses tiny sterile needles to penetrate the surface of the skin. This creates a 'micro trauma', stimulating a healing process through which new collagen and elastin are produced for smoother, firmer and more toned skin.

Although the tools are different to my usual acupuncture needles (a microneedling pen is used), microneedling is almost identical in theory and practice to Traditional Chinese Medicine techniques used to rejuvenate the skin, treat scars and other issues such as hair loss.

Who can benefit from microneedling?

Microneedling is especially beneficial for the following:

  • Facial rejuvenation - Improving the skin's texture, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and reducing the size and appearance of enlarged pores.

  • Reducing the appearance of scars, such as for example, acne scarring on the face. Please note however, that microneedling is contraindicated in those with a history of keloid scarring.

  • Addressing hyperpigmentation and age spots (including age spots on the hands).

How often do I need to have microneedling?

I can offer microneedling as a one-off or occasional treatment and results may be visible following the first session.

However, for optimal results, a course of 4-6 treatments is recommended - ideally spaced 4-6 weeks apart. After this, it is advised to have a two month break before recommencing treatment if desired.

The ideal time of year to consider microneedling is during the autumn/winter months and the early spring, as it is best to avoid direct sun exposure following treatment.

What should I expect at a microneedling session?

I offer two options for microneedling:

  • Express Microneedling:

During this 45 minute session, I will begin by double-cleansing, toning and prepping the skin for treatment.

Hyaluronic acid serum is applied to the skin and worked in using either a microneedling pen. The depth of needle insertion can be adjusted according to the area of the face being treated.

Most people are able to tolerate the treatment without the need for any numbing cream, but this is an option, should you prefer. Once the face (and in some cases neck area) has been treated, a moisturising cream and sun screen are applied and you are good to go.

The skin may be a little red post-treatment, and this is normal and will usually subside after a few hours. It is advised to avoid touching the skin or wearing make up for the rest of the day/evening, so you may wish to avoid planning a session on the same day as a night out.

My charge for Express Microneedling is £60 for a 45 minute session.

  • Deluxe Microneedling

Ideal for those who have enjoyed facial acupuncture sessions previously, who enjoy acupuncture or who are interested in a longer pamper experience.

In addition to the treatment described above, I will incorporate body acupuncture to assist with relaxation and treat the skin from the inside out, LED light and a hydrating collagen mask to maximise results.

My charge for Deluxe Microneedling is £85 for a 90 minute session.

Microneedling contraindications

Microneedling is a safe technique. However, it is contraindicated/unsuitable in the following instances:

  • History of allergies or skin cancer
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • When taking blood thinners, steroids or undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy
  • Pregnancy, those trying to conceive or breastfeeding
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Keloid/hypertrophic scarring
  • During an active acne outbreak or in those taking acne medication such as Roaccutane.

Please note, I prefer to wait 3 months after botox or fillers before offering microneedling treatment.
